Television – Considering how much time we all spend watching TV, it's remarkable how little time scientists have devoted to figuring out what television does to us. Only recently have researchers started looking at how very small kids are affected by TV, despite the fact that Teletubbies, Barney, Baby Einstein, and other video fare for the pre-preschool set has
1st of all: PARENTS! Listen up! TV IS NOT a baby sitter/substitute for a parent, and parental authority/guidance!
WHY should it be any different today than it was for me in the 1950's-60's? Watching TV was a parental-controlled privilage, AFTER the homework, and usually AFTER dinner. I played with peers (usually outside), in all 4 seasons, and weekly TV watching was limited to 3 (yes, only 3) local stations.
Besides the Mickey Mouse Club, I/we watched about 6-8 hours during the week, and 6-8 hours on weekends. PERIOD!
There were marbles, coloring books, jigsaw puzzles, kites, plastic models of airplanes, ships, and cars to paint and assemble, card games, laundry, movies at the theatre, dam building on the creek, rocks to collect, and family to visit, remember your aunts, uncles, and cousins?
TV I watch today includes WWE's Raw and Smackdown, The Weather Channel, and Local news & weather. What more do you need?
