On Wednesday morning, Don Imus called the students who play for the Rutgers University women's basketball team a bunch of "nappy-headed ho's." What followed was a familiar dance for Mr. Imus and the media companies that profit from his ability to shock his way to big audiences: outrage, indignation and, eventually, the expression of deep regret.

""It is unconscionable that anyone would use the airways to utter such disregard for the dignity of human beings who have accomplished much and deserve great credit. It is appropriate that Mr. Imus and MSNBC have apologized.""

Imus was stupid and insensitive in his comments. The Girls from Rutgers did not deserve to be publicly ridiculed for the entertainment of his audience. However blowing this into a sexist or racist thing is inaccurate. Imus refered to the girls on the Tennessee team as "really cute girls" all of the Lady Vols starters except 1 are african american and all of them are women. Imus's statement was stupid, insensitive and uncalled for, the girls from Rutgers deserve a personal apology from him. But please lets not turn this into a racist sexist issue. Imus is just stupid. End of story!

    GO LADY VOLS!

If I were to characterize a team of basketball players, consisting of two jewish starters and three Black starters as "bagel eating", "bloodsucking", "cheap-skates", would that make me anti-semetic or just ignorant?

Obviously imus' comments echo a long line of racial stereotypes that proliferate and justify racist attitudes and behaviors. Read Janet Levines article in the Journal of Psychology dealing with Racism and Stereotyping and it's subconscious affects. I'm sure you realize this, so why do we Blacks continue to explain what whites, jews and others already know (see Rosenberg's comments on Venus and Serena Williams).

I like that Imus says what he thinks. But, I guess he shouldn't be allowed his constitutional rights because he said something some people don't like. If that were the way it's supposed to be then he would have been shut up a long time ago for things he said that I don't agree with.

Whatever happened to all the stringy haired white ho's that used to play basketball? Excuse me. I meant stringy haired women of no color ho's.

"I like that Imus says what he thinks."

Yep. The only problem with Imus is that sometimes he does the saying before he does the thinking.

Americans are to thin skinned. We have all heard various jokes on ethnicity, religion and acts of man. I have heard the honky word and N word by Afro Americans always. Do you want to hear some polish or Italian jokes?

We need to get a grip on life, must a person always be on alert in offending another. Hate this word since it is used so often but I cannot think of another, when a person says one thing and does another, thats "Hypocrisy". I would perfer someone saying something on his mind and if not said in a mean spirited manner, so be it, accept reality.

It's how its said, not what is said.

It was said in a mean spirited manner meant to be degrading to the women on the Rutgers team. I personally think Imus must be a UCONN fan, those are the type of things some of them say about Rutgers. No offense to any civilized UCONN fans, you know we Lady Vol Fans really love you.

Listen whether the players were black or white male or female he had no right to publically insult a team of student atheletes who have worked very hard to be competative in thier sport and get a college education at the same time. He may have a legal right to say it but he does not have the moral right to belittle them and thier accomplishments because of his personal feeling about thier physical appearance. It may not be illegal but it is in poor taste and goes against the very principles we hold dear as a country. That everyone has a shot at achievement if they are willing to work for it, but lets publicly humiliate them if they do not look the was we think they should is not an american value.

It is most unfortunate that most posts to this thread are as insensitive and ignorant as imus. The remarks were totally out of line and under any circumstances should result in a call for the firing of both the executive producer and the alleged professional broadcaster. No rationale can be made for this disgusting behaviour. It cannot be justified and then passed off with yet another bull sh_t worthless excuse of an apology.

I agree. What Imus said was hate speech. Why would something do obscene even be rattling around inside of his head unless he's a racist? The words were meant to slander, degrade, demean and insult a group of young women who's only crime was to make it into Rutgers in the first place and to have the athletic ability to play basketball at the university level.

            He needs to be fired.
