I think it's Locke. Hands down. This episode proved he is key to what's going on. More so than any other "lostie". IMO.

Or maybe there are several key characters...or maybe, Locke is only important in how he affects the destiny of Jack...or maybe he is just a figment of Jack's imagination...or maybe Jack is just a figment of Locke's imagination...or maybe both of them are figments of the REAL key character's imagination, whose significance has yet to be displayed...!!!

The last possibility you posed is interesting... In a recent interview with the guy who plays Ben, he hinted strongly that there might be another group on the island. It's been a source of speculation for a long time, but I think we're going to learn more about them this season.

I don't understand why so many people liked this episode. It was awful. I can understand the dichotomy between Locke's characterization in season 1 - a man full of faith and purpose - with the man in his flashbacks - a naive, suffering soul who can't cut a break to save his life, literally. However, his decisions in last night's flashback were nothing short of stupid. Who in their right mind confronts the con man who stole their kidney and REVEALS the source of his info??? Locke's stupidity put that young guy in danger. And I'm sorry, but an older man simply does not have the strength to push another guy *through* a glass window 8 stories high. I would assume that glass would be reinforced for crazy weather, don't you?
And don't even get me started on Jack. After all the Others have done, he's going to accept Ben's WORD and a freaking HANDSHAKE that his friends will be released AFTER he leaves??!?!

"I can understand the dichotomy between Locke's characterization in season 1 - a man full of faith and purpose - with the man in his flashbacks - a naive, suffering soul who can't cut a break to save his life, literally.: Maybe being cured from being confined to a wheel chair made him a man "full of faith and purpose. You should probably stick to shows like Deal or No Deal.

And maybe you should shove your head under a brick so I can jump on it. I'm allowed to have my own freaking opinion. I felt the writing sucked this episode, regardless of what revelations transpired. I can understand why Locke wants to stay on the island. It saved him and restored his life, but you can't deny that many of his and Jack's actions were completely asinine. Jack trusts Ben? WTF for? Locke gives Ben mobility when he's supposed to be held hostage? Locke's father is suddenly freaking superman and pushes him out an 8-story window?? Yes, wonderful fancy schmancy things happened, but I'm sorry, the revelations could've been better executed.

And frankly, your comment to me makes no sense because you basically reiterate exactly what I said. I said I understood his transformation, his sudden grasp of faith. What I don't understand are his actions during the bulk of the episode. Did you even read my post? GAH! My Mickey Mouse ears are twisting in PMS-ridden ANGST!!

And back to Locke, if you're going to take a paralyzed man hostage, why in holy hell would you place him in a wheelcar and give him *mobility*??? Not to mention when he's eating the chicken he's not paying a lick of attention to Ben. The guy who plays Ben is amazing at channeling the creep factor, but he vascillated so much between "I know everything about you, I'm completely in control!" and "Wah! Poor me!" that I wanted to grab Locke's gun and shoot him myself. I know, I know, he's being manipulative, but for cryin' out loud island people!!!! You know the Others' *game* by now! Why do you give any of them the benefit of the doubt?? And I'm sorry, but the reveal at the end with John's "Dad" was obvious. Good theory, wherever I read it, that he's probably the smoke monster.
Holy cow, that episode left me so bitter...I'm sure I'll be lambasted for these posts, but I'm open to debate. Am I the only one who thought Locke was a complete dolt last night?

That was exasperating, wasn't it? Of course, now we know he's bumping off all forms of outside communication in order to keep his bipedal paradise. It's a very selfish scheme, but then Locke has been overly and abundantly selfless in his flashbacks. Guess he feels the island, the Others, and his plane pals owe him some respite.

If it's something about things in your mind manifesting in reality, then I have pondered that. After all, Ben did say that Locke seemed to have more of a mastery over the island than he did. As with Yemi, Jack's dad, Walt's mind bullets, Hurley's "imaginary" mental institution buddy, etc., etc., it seems to go back to the smoke monster. Are you including the polar bear in this as a manifestation? Now the polar bears are real, aren't they? Considering Kate and Sawyer being kept in bear cages and those dead Dharma dudes (say that five times fast) in the cave.
